New Years Resolutions vs BINGO
Setting "New Years Resolutions" is something so many of us use in order to punish ourselves and set ourselves unrealistic goals we may never achieve, only to feel like complete failures by the end of the year.
Setting target related goals rarely work.
Setting goals such as:
Do xxx amount of steps a day
Stop eating “junk food”
Read 25 books
Exercise every day
Get up at 5am everyday
Just set you up on a path of disappointment, the chances of you maintaining these goals is slim, especially if you are adhd.
If we are being honest with ourselves, these are not goals you really “want” to achieve, they are most likely things you think you need to do in order to be “better”, to be “successful” and are goals you see other people setting as standard.
So this year, instead of setting regular "New Years Resolutions" I have opted to create a 2024 BINGO card instead.
I hope that my explanation of why makes sense, and also hope it opens up some internal questions to the goals you are setting yourself.
The Explanation
The reason I have chosen to do 2024 BINGO as apposed to traditional New Years Resolutions, is so there isn't any pressure on me to complete the goals. It removes the demand of it, which already takes some of the pressure of.
The goals are not time sensitive, they have no specifics, and the reality of it is, in a game of bingo not everyone will get a "full house", some people play and may only get a line, or maybe only get one!
So setting a bingo card of 2024 is more a way of being able to set small achievable goals without the pressure to complete them.
If you don't get all the boxes thats okay, you just didn't get a full house, but the fun is in the taking part!
To anyone who is setting New Years resolutions, remember that
They don’t need to be a burden to you
They shouldn’t cause you intense anxiety
They shouldn’t create a sense of failure if you don’t complete them
They can be FUN! (and honestly they should be)
Try not to set goals that have a limit, for example instead of “read 25 books” you can try “read more non-fiction” or “read more” or it could even just be “to read books” this way you don’t set yourself up with any potential to fail, its a small goal that has no real limit
Remember that your body is NOT a to-do list, and making goals dedicated to altering your body by limiting your food and putting pressure on yourself to “never eat chocolate” or to “exercise every day” will only create an unhealthy relationship with food/exercise and your body
You do not need to set ANY goals if you do not want to
Setting goals you actually want to achieve, that will bring you happiness and make you feel good are far more important than setting goals to fit into a box you don't belong in.
Here is my 2024 BINGO card
I also added a blank version for anyone who wants to use it 💖
